Common Core State Standards in the USA for 6th grade place emphasis on connection ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division. Students should know the concepts of ratio and rate when solving problems. Students should complete their understanding of division of fractions and extend the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, including negative numbers. Students should be able to write, interpret and use expressions in equations. Additionally, students should be developing their understanding of statistical thinking.

The Common Core State Standards in the USA emphasize the ability to solve ratio and rate problems with quantities. Students view equivalent ratios and rates as they derive from pairs of rows and columns in the multiplication table. Students apply fractions, multiplication and division, as well as their relationship to one another to understand the procedures for dividing fractions. The inclusion of negative integers increases the scope of students. Students include the use of variables in their mathematical expressions. Students write expressions which correspond to different situations. Students learn their different expressions can be equivalent. Students develop the ability to think statistically. Data distribution may not have a definite center, but can still be measured with different numerical values.
