What is counting and how can you teach kids how to count ?

Counting is one of the essential skills preschoolers and kindergarteners have to grasp quickly. It is the foundation of many topics and daily life activities which they later need to learn. To teach children how to count entails instructors going gradually, step after step. This is because counting entails learning several skills like: recognizing numbers, being able to tie these to objects counted and later writing and spelling numbers. There are also some rules that apply to counting especially after 10. A subtle way to start is to first focus on teaching the first three numbers i.e. from 1 to 3. Although recognizing numbers is a simple repetitive process of getting kids noticing abstract signs, using objects (like toys, candies etc) is a great device for teaching them how to actually count. Worksheets with pictures of objects and numbers to trace are also a great resource. Flash cards and games will also add to the excitement of learning numbers.
